This is an interesting take on neurofeedback for trauma published in ScienceDirect. The author makes a particularly important point when she explores why ‘evidenced-based therapies’ don’t work for traumatized people. She views neurofeedback as an approach to stabilizing the traumatized brain -which it most certainly is- that will allow patients to better utilize these therapies- which it certainly does. The more ephemeral but no less real effect of training the brain is that it gives rise to a new capacity for self and other, not only a relief from the intrusion of traumatic memories. In this way, NF allows us as trauma patients and trauma therapists to go far beyond what’s possible with even the best psychotherapy.

There has been a lot of speculation and hope that giving oxytocin to people with histories of attachment rupture could help them in bonding. The answer at least in mice is not necessarily so. It’s more complicated than that and there are significant differences in findings depending on where mice were measured- out in the real world or in the lab. It’s an important piece and after reading it you are likely to say what I did: Well, of course.
